Water Walker is an audio-visual videoprojection that explores the cultural
connections that exist between women and water, both on a symbolic and a
concrete level. Water plays a role in our understanding of the world. Throughout
human history it has generated symbolic images, meaning, and values across
time and place. In religion, mythology, folklore, and culture, the properties of
water are often linked to feminine characteristics and the female body through
notions of purity, fertility, beauty, and desire. This also means that women are particularly
vulnerable to climate change, as the journeys to access clean water in some
areas are becoming longer, harder, and more dangerous.
On a concrete level, women have historically, and across cultures, been
responsible for fetching water for domestic tasks - a role that is still relevant in
many parts of the world today.
